Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses a natural diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing to heal ailments in the human body. Ayurveda is one of the ancient medication systems majorly followed in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and most of the South Asian countries. The course relies on the holistic approach to mental and physical health by the use of herbal remedies. The course of study adhering to Ayurveda is BAMS (Bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery). During the study, students get to learn about the concepts of traditional and modern science to cure diseases. The government of India has established a separate Ministry as “The Ministry of Ayush”. It has included six Indian medicine systems amongst which Ayurveda is also considered and holds an eminent position and shares a major part in the number of hospitals, dispensaries, educational institutions, and registered medical practitioners. Apart from MBBS, Ayurveda is the most followed medication system in India as well as abroad. Eligibility criteria and course duration
Bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery is a 5.5 years undergraduate degree program including a 1-year internship period. Candidates seeking to get admissions in BAMS have to fulfill the following criteria
- Candidates are required to pass Class 12th higher secondary board examination or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as core subjects in the science stream with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
- He/she must have studied Sanskrit as a part of the curriculum up to class 10th. Although it’s not necessary but candidates having Sanskrit will be given preference at the time of admissions.
- After the 12th, candidates have to appear for national eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) exam or any other state level entrance exam for BAMS admissions based on the college requirements.
- Admissions will be done on the basis of class 12th marks and qualifying NEET marks.
After completing their BAMS degree, candidates can opt for a 3-year postgraduation specialization programmes in MD (doctor of medicine) Ayurveda or MS (master of surgery) Ayurveda Degree.

Salary package in ayurvedic medicine
A practitioner in ayurvedic medicine generally gets to work in private/government healthcare institutions or is mostly self-employed. Salary package varies from job positions and working institutions. The average estimated salary of an ayurvedic doctor in India falls between 4.8-6 LPA, which is quite good to start with. However, an experienced doctor in ayurvedic medicine with prodigious key skills in healing people can earn up to 12-16 LPA. Since Ayurveda is growing in its field and attracting people from overseas, one can make a good career abroad also and can easily earn up to US $20,000-$25,000 per annum.
